Produce with a purpose

This past December, Newman's Own Organics introduced a new line of organic fresh produce items, and Goodness Greeness began distributing them to our retail customers.

These new products, including packaged salads, romaine hearts and carrots, have become extremely popular in the Chicago area.  In fact, thanks to you, our area now leads the nation in the support of these organic items, called "Produce with a Purpose (TM)".

To thank you for this support, Newman's Own Organics will provide you with coupons (35 cents off) for their products in the Chicago Sun Time this Sunday.

Here's the text of the coupon announcement letter from Nell Newman, President of Newman's Own Organics:

"We would like to thank everyone in the Chicago market for your enthusiastic support for the Newman’s Own® Organics Fresh Produce line.  We are excited that you are enjoying these products.  You are going to find another reason to purchase Newman’s Own® Organics bagged salads, clamshell salads, romaine hearts, carrots, and potatoes in the Chicago Sun Times this Sunday, June 5th

A coupon for Newman’s Own® and Newman’s Own® Organics Fresh Produce will appear in the paper this Sunday.  You will be able to receive $0.35 off any Newman’s Own® Organics Fresh Produce item.  The coupon will give you another reason to try Produce With a Purpose™.

Thank you again for helping Newman’s Own® Organics give millions of dollars to arts, education, disaster relief, and many other great causes."

Cherries - sweet and healthy

Last week, we mentioned in this newsletter that organic cherries are finally here.  Over the next few weeks, cherries will be at their peak and you really have to try them.

Organic sweet cherries launch the summer fruit season.  They "explode with a rich, sweet flavor".  They're great as a snack, in salads, as a topping on meat dishes or smothered with chocolate.

For flavor alone, sweet cherries make a great treat.  But did you know that sweet cherries are also surprisingly good for you?

In terms of traditional nutrients, sweet cherries are rich in vitamin C and B complex and are a good source of potassium.

In addition, sweet cherries also provide a broad range of health benefits due to the antioxidants that they contain. (Does this sound familiar - we wrote about the health role of antioxidants in fresh organic berries several weeks ago.)

These health benefits include:

   Pain relief,
   Cancer prevention,
   Bone health,
   Heart disease prevention.

For example, researchers claim that eating 20 cherries is ten times more potent than aspirin (inflammatory enzymes are blocked, reducing pain, including arthritic pain).

Further, certain populations in Asia that consume large volumes of cherries have a significant lower incidence of cancer (or are cancer free).

For more information on sweet cherries, including nutritional benefits, recipes, cherry games for children and more, go to the cherry section of the Washington State Fruit Commission's website.
