Holiday
Greetings!
The staff here at
Goodness Greeness send you our best wishes for the holidays.
We hope you enjoy the holidays (and some time off) with your
family and friends. We'll be open over the next few
weeks, providing you with organic fruits, vegetables and
many specialty items to keep you well-supplied over the
holidays.
Holiday
fun with organics
Throughout the year in
this newsletter, we talk about organic produce, a healthy
diet, trends and issues relating to organics, our commitment
to family farms and local growers and news from Goodness
Greeness. While we try to do this with humor at times,
these are all serious topics.
This week, let's forget
about the serious topics and let's have some holiday fun.
(Sorry, we can't supply the holiday cheer - although we do
have a few experts on this subject on our crew).
The upcoming holidays
provide a great opportunity for you to have some fun with
organics, in gift-giving and entertaining. Goodness
Greeness supplies a broad range of seasonal items that you
can use in gifts and in your "get-togethers" over the next
few weeks. All of these items should be available at
your local organic market.
Let's start with your
"Holiday Fun with Organics" shopping list:
Orchard
Valley nuts - almonds, walnuts, pistachios
Medjool dates
Cranberries
Tangerines
Apple cider
Here are some ideas and
tips for enjoying these items over the holidays:
Organic
nuts
Organic nuts are a great
(and healthy) addition to your holiday plans, as fresh snacks, in cookies
and cakes, in date nut or cranberry bread and even in salads.
In a small bag with a
bow, organic nuts can also be a novel, tasty and nutritious gift,
either in a gift basket or as a stocking stuffer.
Since organic almonds have a unusually sweet flavor, they do
especially well as a fresh snack.
Walnuts, traditionally used in holiday cakes,
cookies and date nut bread, can also be enjoyed as a fresh
snack In the whole shell in a
bowl, walnuts also make a pleasant holiday display.
Medjool
dates
For those of you who love dates,
you have to try our organic Medjool dates over the holidays.
Many consider Medjools as a delicacy. They are an
increasingly popular variety with a refined flavor, have
no sodium or cholesterol and are a good source of dietary
fiber. Originally from Morocco, they are now grown in
the Southwest.
Try Medjools in your date
nut bread recipe and add a loaf to a gift basket. This is a
healthier alternative than the more traditional candied
fruit cake.
You can also use Medjools
as a fresh snack, in salads, muffins, cookies or as an hor
d'oeurve spread with cream cheese.

recipes in your holiday cooking, check out

Cranberries
We still have a great
supply of fresh organic cranberries. Homemade cranberry sauce
made from fresh organic cranberries adds unique flavor to
many holiday dishes. (And everything we just said
about date nut bread can be applied to cranberry nut bread
made with fresh organic cranberries).
For more ideas on using
cranberries, see
Issue # 41 of Organics for you.
Tangerines
Are you looking for fresh
(no pun intended) ideas for stocking stuffers? Organic tangerines (the delicious Sunburst variety is now
available in good quantity) make great
stocking stuffers. Your kids will love them!
There's lot's more on
tangerines (and other organic citrus fruits available from
Goodness Greeness) in our newsletters of the last two weeks
(Issue
# 48 and
Issue # 49).
Apple
Cider
For a festive holiday
drink, try nutritious organic apple cider. And nothing beats
a cup of hot apple cider on a cold day in December. Here's an easy and tasty
recipe for this traditional beverage:
Ingredients:
6 cups organic apple cider
1/4 cup real maple syrup
2 cinnamon sticks
6 whole cloves
6 whole allspice berries
1 orange peel, cut into strips
1 lemon peel, cut into strips
Directions:
Pour the apple cider and maple
syrup into a large stainless
steel saucepan.
Place the
cinnamon sticks, cloves,
allspice berries, orange peel
and lemon peel in the center of
a washed square of cheesecloth;
fold up the sides of the
cheesecloth to enclose the
bundle, then tie it up with a
length of kitchen
string. Drop the spice
bundle into the cider mixture.
Place the saucepan over moderate
heat for 5 to 10 minutes, or
until the cider is very hot but
not boiling.
Remove the cider from the heat.
Discard the spice bundle. Ladle
the cider into big cups or mugs,
adding a fresh cinnamon stick to
each serving if desired.
Enjoy your
holidays with these organic seasonal items from Goodness
Greeness.
