Spam, spam and more spam
In
an on-going effort to cut down on spam, email-borne viruses
and "phishing" scams, many Internet Service Providers and
larger corporations who have their own email servers have
recently upgraded their spam filters. And guess what,
they are working!
Some of our newsletters
are now being "bounced" (returned) by these new spam filters
and you may miss an issue.
We are working diligently
to make sure that you don't miss any issues of this
newsletter. However, if you do, here's a couple of
things that you can do:
1) make sure
that any spam filters that you are using accept our
email address (newsletter@goodnessgreeness.com)
and
2) check the Newsletters section of our website to see the latest
issues (www.goodnessgreeness.com).
National Potato Month
February is National
Potato Month (and according to the
Idaho Potato
Commission, since February also includes Valentine's
Day, it's also called National Potato Lover's Month).
To help you celebrate
this not-so-famous-yet month-long event, Goodness Greeness
is featuring a great supply of organic potatoes all month.
These potatoes are available at your local organic market:
Fingerling potatoes, in 1 and 1/2 pound bags (and also
loose)
from Cinacia Farms in Colorado:
Austrian crescents,
Ruby crescents,
Russian banana fingerlings.
From
Newman's Own Organics, red and russet potatoes in 5
pound bags.
From
Cal-Organic Farms and TD Willey Farms, Yukon Golds.
From Igl
Farms in Wisconsin, reds, russets and Yukon Golds in
5
pound bags (with the FamilyFarmed.org label).
Naturally nutritious, always delicious
Potatoes
contain many of the essential nutrients that today's dietary
guidelines recommend more of in the American diet.
Potatoes eaten
with the skin provide nearly half of the recommended daily
value for vitamin C and they are one of the best sources of
potassium and fiber.
One
medium-sized potato contains 100 calories and provides
complex carbohydrates needed to fuel our brains and bodies,
giving us the energy we need for a busy lifestyle.
Let's look at
the nutritional benefits of potatoes more closely.
Potatoes:
1. are a source of
complex carbohydrates, essential to "good energy",
2. are a great source
of potassium (essential for muscle building and nervous
system response to stimulation),
3. are a great source
of vitamin C (important for healthy tissue and for
healing wounds),
4. are a good source
of vitamin B (important for healthy red blood cells and
amino acids)
5. contain iron and
important trace minerals,
6. provide highly
digestible protein,
7. are a great source
of dietary fiber, especially in the skins,
8. are low in sodium,
with no fat and cholesterol.
As you can
see, potatoes - especially organically grown ones - are
nutritional powerhouses.
The US Potato
Board (www.healthypotato.com)
has a major marketing campaign for the 6000+ growers that it
represents that is built on these nutritional benefits.
The symbol of this campaign is Healthy Mr. Potato
Head. Check out their site for pictures of Mr. Potato
Head, tons of recipes and more nutritional information.
Also, you can
find more on potato nutrition in our
Issue # 47 (November 22, 2005) feature article "A fresh
take on potatoes".
Our valued
