Food Safety Spotlight: Tomatoes

The FDA is alerting consumers that an outbreak of salmonellosis in several states appears to be linked to consumption of raw red tomatoes, likely of the Roma, plum, or round varieties. The specific type and source of the contaminated tomatoes has not been determined, and is still under investigation. No tomato recall has been issued. Neither the FDA, the CDC, or the USDA have contacted Goodness Greeness or any of our organic tomato growers with regards this investigation or regarding a potential recall. The FDA is currently advising consumers to limit their consumption of tomatoes to the following varieties which are not likely to be the source of the outbreak: cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, tomatoes sold with vine still attached, and tomatoes grown at home. The FDA recommends consuming raw red plum, raw red Roma, or raw round red tomatoes, only if they were grown and harvested from areas which have been determined to not be associated with the outbreak. The FDA’s list of these areas is being updated regularly at this site: http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/tomatoes.html#outbreak#outbreak
