Outreach Spotlight: Food Desert Awareness Month

Goodness Greeness is excited to help kick off National Food Desert Awareness Month this Sunday August 31, 2008 at 2 p.m., handing out some of our favorite fruit—Organic Pink Pearl Apples—at a rally on Chicago’s South Side—211 E. 115th St. A Food Desert is any geographic area with no or distant grocery stores, but often plenty of fast food restaurants. Research shows that residents of Food Deserts die prematurely more than they otherwise would from diet-related conditions including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Chicago has half a million Food Desert residents—and is the perfect place to kick off the first-ever National Food Desert Awareness Month. Hundreds of participants are expected to rally with signs reading, “Welcome, Grocers!”, “Our Community Eats Organic”, and “My Baby Digs Fresh Vegetables." City Health Commissioner Dr. Terry Mason will speak on the benefits of healthy eating, and Rodney Scaman of Goodness Greeness will encourage retailers to enter local underserved markets with our company's support.
